A person was reportedly killed and left in a house before it caught fire Saturday morning in the university area.

Rebecca Atkins, an Albuquerque Police Department spokeswoman, said homicide detectives are investigating the case.

She said Albuquerque Fire Rescue was called to the house fire in the 2500 block of Silver SE, near Stanford, around 7 a.m.

After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found a person dead in the house. Atkins said the investigation turned criminal "due to injuries on the individual."

She did not give the person's gender or release any other details, and AFR did not say what caused the blaze.

"More details will be released as they are available," Atkins said.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue said 13 units were dispatched to the blaze, which involved one unit at a single-story duplex.

"Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire and after fire was extinguished a civilian was found inside this unit by fire crews but this individual had succumbed to injuries," the agency said.

No injuries to firefighters were reported.
